 Avoid Refrigeration Potholes
Water freezing and thawing repeatedly can create damaging potholes in a road. Similarly,
small amounts of trapped water in a refrigeration system going through freezing cycles can
open leaks in the joints of coils. You say you have pulled a full vacuum, water can't be
in your system? That's what the owner of the R-2 evaporator above (with the coil sliced
open to show the blisters) thought. It caused lots of problems. Cost lots of money. And,
regardless of what you've heard, there are no joint-free coils. We've been using
hair-pin bends in tubing for over 40 years, as our competitors do, to reduce the number of
joints. But all evaporator coils have joints. All. However, Russell offers
full-penetration brazing (patent pending), which eliminates the crevices in joints where
water can be trapped. And freeze. So Russell equipment doesn't get potholes. Sooner or
later our competitors will recognize the need, too. We're just first. Again.
